About the series Stand

Hovey is heavily influenced by the wonders of the natural world. She travels widely to experience new flora and fauna.

The Stand paintings are inspired by Hovey’s stay at Brush Creek Artist Residency in Saratoga, Wyoming during the fall of 2014. The residency is a working ranch at the base of Medicine Bow National Forest nested between the Sierra Madre and the Snowy Mountain ranges. The studios are located along a flowing creek, bordered by stands of aspen trees.

During her stay, Hovey witnessed the transistion of seasons from green leafed trees, to the golden colors of fall, to the snow covered leafless branches of winter. Throughout this time, she documented the
silhouettes of the trees and the changing light. The Stand Series is the results of these observations.
