With Repository for Tending Garden/Fertile Grounds, Hovey ponders how we will feed the 8 billion people on the planet. The system currently in place that transports daily staples, fresh fruit and vegetables, and commodity crops between hemispheres, across oceans, over continents is energy intensive and unsustainable. Soil is being depleted. Farmland ownership is being gobbled up by corporations. When topsoil is exhausted, has blown away, or is poisoned, how will we grow? When knowledge of how to tend plants is lost, where will we learn to cultivate crops? When development consumes the land, we will need to grow vertically.
